High Adventure in general

Monthly high adventure crew meeting on designated Tuesday of month (e.g. first)

To consider for Lenhok'sin

Must come on at least one of the shake out weekends

Crew leader or leaders should come on both

To consider For Philmont

Must have come to Lenhok'sin

Participate in shake out weekends in 04-05

Have either Backpacking or hiking merit badges

General Crew Stuff

"Crew Comes First"

Bear Bag

All food Garbage Smell-ables (tooth paste etc) one rope with ring and pulley at one end put second rope through pulley pull up bear bags and secure

For Philmont

Day clothes and sleep clothes -- after changing into sleep clothes put day clothes in bag and toss into bearmuda triangle (fire ring, bear bag station and sump) retrieve in AM

Cooking procedures

make sure cooks wash hands before cooking heat up water to sterilize cups and spoons before eating set aside for later cook in one pot -- eat all food bring spatula to clean out pot to get all food out better to gut sump than to carry remains out transfer some water from water pot to cook pot with a couple drops of soap scrub drain through drainer (Frisbee with holes) pack any residue out in zip lock bag use rest of water to clean crew cups and spoons PHILMONT cooks and pot scrubbers' clean hand thoroughly after dinner

Navigation

Separate role of navigator from crew chief - rotate responsibility every day

trek card for each day --- vertical lines are distance, horizontal lines are elevation -- scale based on distance/elevation change for the day -- indicate every trail change - put L or R on card to indicate direction one would take on trail -- also indicate landmarks based on where they will appear and on what side of the trail -- e.g. if stream on the right at some point draw blue line on right side of line where stream would be landmark -- also mark places where water would be available

Other Health and Safety

have container for mixing powders drinks (mix come with dinners) -don't put in canteens - reduces effectiveness of iodine

don't share canteens - great way to get everybody sick

Mini first aid kit for each member - hot spot kits, mole skin, foot powder, chap stick, nail scissors

crew first aid - ammonia D for diarrhea

Crew Advisors to do's

3 - 4 shake down hikes in mountainous terrain for Philmont

Review medical forms in advance and meet with parents to be sure about any special concerns

Need members of crew current on first ad and CPR

Philmont tips/issue

BE ON TRAIL BY 6 am -- Don't want to be walking in heat of the day

Limit personal gear to 25 pound

Leave plenty of room for food

Be kind and supportive to your ranger (guide) - he mostly interacts with crew chief rather than crew advisors

Blood pressure and weight checks -- will not be able to go on trail if BMI too high (described on Philmont medical form)

On Topo map - mark - outpost, trail closures and water (Crew Advisor keeps second map)

"Your Life" - schedule/ sign off sheet kept by crew chief

Have crew members wear hiking boots on plane to make sure that they aren't left home

Training (adults) multiple 10 mile hikes with 50 lb pack during final couple weeks before trek

Crew should be skilled in getting tarp up quickly (under a minute or two) -- made need protection from rain or hail.

Potential health problems

Hypothermia Dehydration Heat Exhaustion Altitude sickness sometimes a problem after 8,000 ft Vaseline jelly may help moisten nose

Equipment

can rent two man tents, pots

need to bring stakes for dining fly and for tents - heavy duty

send stoves and gas by mail in advance - use white gas backpacking stoves

don't need flashlights with heavy batteries

need fleece (synthetic) not cotton sweatshirts

poly long sleeve shirt underneath

wool or poly wool hat

30 SPF sun block

UV reducing sunglasses

Bottom of milk gallon for wash basin

Use poly shorts with built in briefs rather than cotton underwear

Sleeping bag -- good to at least 20 degrees (used 15 degree rated bag) -- no down -- holifill bag

Boots should provide good ankle support - can bring some type of light weight shoe for camp

poly pro liners and synthetic or wool outer socks

Rain gear

rain jacket -- need to be breathable rain pants storms are severe -- make ponchos useless -- also provide no protection from hail

can't use hammocks in Philmont

Backpack -- external -- 4300 cu in internal - 5,000 cu in

walking stick or walking poles
